Professional development

The law is ever changing. Members have access to a large range of professional development opportunities, often at discounted rates, to ensure that they keep up to date with changes in law and legal practice. 

Registered Legal Executives are required to complete continuing professional development (CPD) annually as a condition of their ongoing registration.

Networking

Making connections is important to professionals. Being a member of your professional body offers myriad opportunities to grow your professional network. 

Branch networking and social events, seminars and the biennial NZLS CLE Legal Executives Conference all provide opportunities to meet other members as well as industry experts.

Kaiārahi mentoring service

The term Kaiārahi means ‘someone who guides; leader, mentor, counsellor’. 

We recognise the importance of providing a support network for our members, in both professional and personal capacities. Our national Kaiārahi service supplements the ongoing informal support offered through our branches via their networking events and seminars.

Biennial survey of members’ salaries and working conditions

As part of our role to provide support and information to legal executives, we commission a ‘conditions and rewards’ survey of all members every two years. 

The main purpose of the survey is to inform Registered Legal Executives of the terms and conditions of employment of legal executives in their region and across New Zealand.

The survey is the only survey specifically about New Zealand legal executives. With a 70% response rate, members and employers alike find the results very helpful.

  • Work and responsibilities
  • Workplace environment
  • Salaries
  • Working hours/leave entitlements
  • LENZ membership

Statutory recognition

Under the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988 (s.94A) Registered Regal Executives (Fellows, Associates, and Affiliates with at least 12 months’ legal executive experience) have the right to explain the implications to donors of, and witness donor signatures to, enduring powers of attorney. 

Fellows have the right to take statutory declarations under the Oaths and Declarations Act 1957 (s.9).

Fellows are also recognised as trusted referees in the AML/CFT Amended Identity Verification Code of Practice 2013 (s.8).

Associate membership of the New Zealand Law Society

Registered Legal Executives are entitled to associate membership of the New Zealand Law Society (NZLS) through their LENZ membership. 

Via their NZLS membership, Registered Legal Executives may also apply for associate membership of the Property Law Section of the NZLS. 

NZLS associate membership provides Registered Legal Executives with discounted access to CPD webinars, seminars and conferences offered by NZLS CLE Ltd.
